Growing Masig is an emerging community-led social enterprise dedicated to eliminating food insecurity and building long-term food sovereignty on Masig Island in the Torres Strait. Grounded in traditional ecological knowledge, climate-resilient agricultural production, and economic self-reliance, the enterprise collaborates with Elders, youth, and families to revitalise native food practices and expand community-owned food systems. By reducing dependency on vulnerable, high-cost mainland supply chains, Growing Masig retains vital skills, resources, and nutrition within the island while empowering local livelihoods.
What they’re pitching for…
This project supports the establishment of a community micro-farm pilot as part of the broader Masig Island Circular Food System and Economy. Designed in partnership with First Nations researchers and local community members, the initiative funds essential micro-farming infrastructure alongside training, skills development, and local employment for residents. By testing climate-resilient local food production techniques directly on Country, the project improves access to fresh, affordable produce for islanders while establishing a proven, scalable model for regional food independence.
