Anika Legal is a non-profit helping vulnerable people in Australia to maintain safe housing through free online legal support.
Up to 1 million Australian renters live in homes so unsafe they could harm their health. Yet seven in ten fear that asking for repairs will lead to a retaliatory rent increase, and almost half fear they would be unlawfully evicted. They need legal support, but can’t afford a lawyer.
Anika Legal's unique model connects people who can’t access a lawyer with law students, through an internship program supervised by lawyers. These programs are funded by universities seeking to provide their students with practical training opportunities. Over four years in tenancy law, Anika Legal have helped over 600 renters stay in safe homes, and empowered over 100 students to fight for access to justice.
Anika Legal first pitched in 2019 for funding to expand their team so they can continue to provide free legal advice to people in need and scale their impact, providing more accessible legal support to vulnerable members of the community.
DeadlyScience's vision is to be the leading STEM education support charity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities in Australia.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia were the first scientists of this land and DeadlyScience is committed to preserving that history and to improving education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students throughout Australia.
Their programs aim to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student school attendance, which sits far below the national level from the first year of school, and engagement with STEM subjects to disrupt cycles of educational poverty in Indigenous communities and build future generations of Indigenous STEM professionals.
Deadly Science first pitched in 2021 to expand their tech capability to deliver lessons to remote communities and to put STEM resources into First Nations Languages for the first time ever.
Hotel Etico is Australia's first social enterprise hotel, employing and training young people with disability.
As a registered NDIS provider, Hotel Etico support young people develop work and independent living skills, with the aim of starting a career in hospitality and a life of independence. Their trainees live on site while employed in a fully integrated, open employment setting, being paid full award wages from day one and being front and centre in their business, learning skills across the entire operation.
Through the Academy of Independence, a dedicated on-site apartment, they are supported to develop independent living skills and reinforce the skills they learn on the job, supported by hospitality and disability professionals. Graduates of the program are supported to secure open employment with their strong network of hospitality industry partners.
Hotel Etico first pitched in 2021 for funding to expand its Independence Program to employ and train more young adults with intellectual disabilities.
